The BVLGARI Blue
Yesterday, October 20th 2010, Christie’s New York jewelry auction presented the BVLGARI Blue. A two-stone diamond ring featuring the largest triangular-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond ever to appear at auction.
The ring was designed by Rome’s legendary jeweler’s BVLGARI in the 1970s and was being sold by a collector who bought it as a present for his wife after the birth of their first son for around $1 million. At the time of the ring’s purchase, BVLGARI’s eminence in fine jewelry was rapidly becoming recognized on an international level.  Established in 1879 by Sotirio Bulgari, it first opened it’s doors Via Sistina in Rome in 1905, and after several decades of steady growth, the company’s landmark store opened on Rome’s fashionable Via dei Condotti. By the 1970s, BVLGARI had begun to incorporate geometric forms, unusual combinations of colored and colorless diamonds, and the predominant use of yellow gold settings.
The BVLGARI Blue ring has stones weighting respectively 10.95 carats for the fancy vivid blue diamond, and 9.87 carats for the white diamond, set to the baguette-cut diamond half-hoop, mounted in yellow gold. Estimated at over $12 million, it was sold for $15.7 million by an Asian collector who was closely challenged by one other client in the room, and two other clients on the telephone.
In recent years, prices for top-quality colored diamonds have increased rapidly, driven by both collector demand and increasingly limited supply. The coveted Vivid Blue tone and saturation in diamonds are amongst the most prized of colored diamonds due to their rarity, earning exceptional prices of well over $1 million per carat at auction.
